AudibleKids is making a series of picture books available as audiobooks. The images are synchronized to the text meaning that children can view the original images.

Audible Kids Enhanced is a new service that combines images and audio content. The images are synchronized to the narration allowing children to follow the story in pictures as well as the spoken word.

The AudibleKids Enhanced service gives traditional children's story books a contemporary makeover, combining new technology with traditional story telling. This innovation makes audiobooks an attractive option for young children. Very young children may find it difficult to follow a story from an audiobook with no pictures. The inclusion of images and graphics in the AudibleKids Enhanced service provides images that act as a prompt and help young children to understand the story.

Books Available in the Enhanced Format

The Enhanced service uses the original images from the story books. There are a wide range of books available including both fiction and non fiction. The audiobooks that are available in the Enhanced format cover a wide range of ages, although the majority are books that are suitable for children aged between 0 – 7 years old.

The format also includes text books. The provision of images that accompany text means that educational and reference books that would previously have been impractical in a solely audio format, now provide a complete solution.

There are many award winning books featured such as the Village of Round and Square Houses by Ann Grifalconi and narrated by Cheryl Lynn Bruce. This won the Caldecott Medal and the ALA Notable Books for Children award.

AudibleKids Enhanced Compatible Listening Devices

AudibleKids Enhanced content can be listened and viewed using a computer with iTunes 7.5 or higher. This content can also be viewed using an Apple iPod Nano (3rd Generation only) or Apple iPod Classic (models released in October 2007 or later).

Benefits of Enhanced Audiobooks for Children

The combination of audio and visual content provides some useful benefits for children:

  • The synchronized images help a young child to comprehend the story
  • The visual images will stop children from becoming bored or distracted
  • Images that accompany text books can be educational, for instance helping a child learn the name of different animals
  • The audiobooks are relatively short meaning that a child can easily listen to one in a single sitting.
  • Many short audiobooks for children are low cost, making them an ideal complement to books, videos or other forms of story telling

AudibleKids Enhanced audiobooks are another way of helping children to listen and learn, as well as gain an appreciation of a good story and the importance of the spoken word. For more information see the AudibleKids Enhanced section of the AudibleKids website.
